A SMALL PAIR OF OCHRE VINTAGE FOO DOGS
Chinese circa 1900 - 1930
A very sweet pair of Chinese export porcelain sancai (three colored) foo dogs. These two are standing guard solo, neither holding their customary ball or cub.
Foo dogs are not actually dogs at all but very stylized lions. Imperial Guardian Lions are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. The male lion stands over a ball which represents the world or the home. The female has a playful cub underfoot, representing the cycle of life or the home's inhabitants.
The male guards the structure and the female protects those dwelling inside, a must have for every well- appointed home :)
Foo dogs look especially great in groups, start your collection today!
This pair is in excellent antique condition, hand-picked by me to a standard I would gladly display in my own home. Given their age, any small nicks, crazing or minor glazing wear are not considered defects, just evidence of a life well lived.
Any patina or signs of age are documented in the photos for your reference. If you have any specific questions before purchasing please contact shop@jamescoviello.com.
