  • Chinese circa 1900 - 1930

A charming pair of Chinese export porcelain sancai (three colored) foo dogs.

Foo dogs are not actually dogs at all but very stylized lions. Imperial Guardian Lions are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. The male lion stands over a ball which represents the world or the home. The female has a playful cub underfoot, representing the cycle of life or the home's inhabitants.

The male guards the structure and the female protects those dwelling inside, a must have for every well- appointed home :)

Foo dogs look especially great in groups, start your collection today!

This pair is in excellent antique condition, hand-picked by me to a standard I would gladly display in my own home. Given their age, any small nicks, crazing or minor glazing wear are not considered defects, just evidence of a life well lived.

Any patina or signs of age are documented in the photos for your reference. If you have any specific questions before purchasing please contact
